James O. Grunebaum, professor, taught at Buffalo State from 1971 till 2005. He chaired the department from 1977 to 1980. From 1987 to 1999, he directed the All College Honors Program and in 1997 he earned the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He retired in 2005.
Dr. Grunebaum, a very generous donor to the college, resides in Buffalo and remains very active in the department colloquia and Ethics Bowl.
Professor Grunebaum published two books: Friendship: Liberty, Equality, and Utility, State University of New York Press, Albany, 2003, and Private Ownership, Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1987. He published more that a dozen articles in philosophy journals and made more than twenty five presentations at philosophy conferences in the United States, China and Turkey.
